Celtic expert: Giorgos Giakoumakis told to finalise English club move as terms agreed

Frank McAvennie has insisted a move to the English Championship would be “ideal” for Celtic striker Giogos Giakoumakis.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said there are no bids from Championship clubs for Giakoumakis but believes it would be the best move for him.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio (12 January), the 28-year-old has reportedly agreed personal terms with Serie A side Sampdoria.

The Italian side are said to want the striker on a loan deal with an obligation to buy if they avoid relegation from the Italian top flight this season.

Japanese side Urawa Red Diamonds are also said to have tabled an offer for the Greece international for a permanent deal this month but it is unclear if Giakoumakis would be keen on a move to Japan.

Celtic are believed to be looking at Cho Gue-sung as a replacement for Giakoumakis, should he leave the Glasgow club this month.

Giakoumakis’ current deal expires in 2026 but attempts from Parkhead bosses to tie him down to a new, longer-term contract have failed.

But McAvennie has suggested the English second-tier would be the best place for the goalscorer.

I do not think there is a club there interested in him but, I think it would be ideal.

One of the top Championship clubs in England because that is his game.

I think it would be good for him to go down there. Ange is keeping things quite tight-lipped.
