Celtic expert issues ‘bias’ claim as David Turnbull footage emerges
Frank McAvennie has suggested there is a bias against Celtic in Scottish refereeing.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said that there are too many mistakes with VAR and it is “not right for football”.
As shown on Sky Sports (5 February), David Turnbull scored the final goal in the Celts’ 4-1 win over St Johnstone on Sunday (5 February).
But it took referee David Dickinson and VAR official Greg Aitken nearly three minutes to check if the goal was allowed to stand, even though the it came deep into stoppage time and the visitors were already 3-1 up.
A similar incident occurred in the game against Livingston on Wednesday (1 February), when Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal on half time received a lengthy VAR review for no obvious reason.
The Hoops went on to win the game 3-0, all of which came in the first half.
But McAvennie isn’t surprised Celtic are so often on the receiving end of strange VAR decisions.
“I just think some of the referees are hopeless,” he told Football Insider.

“They are arrogant and they think they are above everyone. It is supposed to help people and all it has done is create more controversy and that is not right for football. I do not believe it is a good thing.
“I think there is a lot of mistakes and I think there is a lot of bias against Celtic. It is just happening too much.“
