Celtic expert issues ‘huge’ claim as January signings mooted
Frank McAvennie has claimed Celtic need to offload players and make more signings in January.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said there is still a “huge gap” between the Celts and other teams in Europe.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have just one point from four Champions League games in Group F.
After a 2-0 defeat to RB Leipzig on Tuesday (11 October), the Celts are out of the competition and their hopes of a place in the Europa League are hanging by a thread.
As quoted by the BBC (14 October), Postecoglou said his side have “earned the right” to play on the top European stage and proved that they belong there.
McAvennie said there is still a lot of work to be done before Celtic can compete at the top level.
“There is a huge gap and Ange knows that,” he told Football Insider.
“He will need to sign more players in January. They have got the nucleus of a great squad there but they have got to get rid of the dead wood. [Aaron] Mooy is too slow, he just slows everything down and that is not what Celtic need.

“The people that are coming on are not up to it yet. The manager will know who to get rid of and who to keep.
“Good teams bring on quality, you look at who Liverpool have the ability to bring on. Scottish football is where it is at the moment and Celtic and Rangers have done well to get where they have.”
