Celtic expert lambasts ‘nonsense’ VAR as David Turnbull as footage emerges

Frank McAvennie has slammed VAR for awarding “nothing” to Celtic since its introduction.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker thought the use of the technology would improve after the World Cup.

As shown on Sky Sports (25 December), David Turnbull was booked for a high tackle on St Johnstone goalkeeper Remi Matthews on Saturday (24 December).

Referee Kevin Clancy was instructed by VAR official Mike Roncone to have another look at the incident and upgraded Turnbull’s punishment to a straight red card.

As quoted by the Scotsman (24 December), Ange Postecoglou said he did not think Turnbull’s high challenge was intentional and thought a yellow card was a suitable punishment.

The Hoops went on to win the game 4-1 but the midfielder is set to miss the game against Hibernian on 28 December and Rangers on 2 January.

Thankfully for the Celts the Scotland international has not been a key member of Postecoglou’s starting XI but has been utilised as a substitute in recent games.

McAvennie was unsurprised by another decision going against the Hoops.

Celtic have got nothing out of VAR so far.

Celtic

Rangers have never hardly had a penalty given against them. It is just unheard of.

We always wondered what it was going to be like when we came back from the World Cup, in England and Scotland. Sometimes it takes a wee bit to get going but it is an absolute nonsense.

In other news, McManus has issued ‘massive’ Callum McGregor claim after Celtic development.
