Celtic expert makes intriguing Nick Walsh claim after Rangers latest – ‘I have to hold my hands up’
Frank McAvennie has told Scottish referees to “take a leaf out” of Nick Walsh’s book after what he saw in the Celtic v Rangers Cup final last weekend (26 February).
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker was full of praise for Walsh for avoiding controversy in last weekend’s Viaplay Cup final.
Walsh was the onfield referee for the game, with John Beaton in the VAR room as the Celts defeated their Glasgow rivals 2-1 to lift the League Cup for the second year in a row.
VAR has been the subject of a lot of criticism in Scotland in recent weeks but there were no dubious calls during the big game.
McAvennie claimed he hasn’t given referee Walsh enough credit in the past.
“I was a bit critical of some of the referees but I have to hold my hands up,” he told Football Insider.
“Walsh got it right, he was different class and he reffed it well. There was no controversy. He did not even go to VAR at any point which was so refreshing.

“He made up his mind. John Beaton was on VAR and Walsh would not let him referee the game. Some of the other referees have got to take a leaf out of his book.
“VAR is supposed to be there to help, it is not there for everything. Referees are using it as an excuse now for everything. Walsh did very well and I have got to give him a bit of credit.“
