Kieran Maguire issues ‘absolutely critical’ claim after Celtic fans submit vote of no confidence

It is “absolutely critical” for groups such as the Celtic Trust to hold their clubs to account and ensure that the highest standards of transparency are met.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the role of fan groups in football governance.

Celtic Trust held their AGM on Tuesday (17 May) after a season in which the Hoops themselves reclaimed the Scottish Premiership crown.

But a motion for a vote of no confidence was submitted by a group led by Chris McGachy, who owns a small number of shares in the club.

McGachy has grown frustrated with declining membership numbers and a lack of drive to increase the Trust’s stake in Celtic.

The resolution was not passed.

Maguire explained the role that he believes the ideal supporters’ group should play.

“The best trusts are those which act as an intermediary between the fanbase and the board of directors,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“They can communicate levels of concern and identify issues that are frustrating fans. Being transparent is absolutely critical for any business.

“Football clubs should not be immune from that just because they have a product with a brand loyalty that exceeds that of any other on the planet.”
