‘Pile of lies’ – Celtic fans tear into Parkhead legend after controversial Rangers claim

Former Celtic captain Paul Lambert has blasted the decision to demote Rangers to Scotland’s Third Division – and the Parkhead fans on Twitter are absolutely seething.

Lambert claimed to beIN Sports that the decision to demote Rangers had harmed the whole of Scottish football as well as the national team with the Ibrox giants in the wilderness for four years before returning to the top flight last year.

Rangers were kicked out of the then-SPL before being voted in as members of the Third Division after the club’s parent company entered liquidation in June 2012.

Celtic fans tore into Parkhead legend Lambert for his controversial claim about their bitter rivals – and insisted Rangers’ punishment was merited after “cheating” the Scottish game.

Here are some of their comments on Twitter:

Rangers finally returned to the top tier of Scottish football last season but were well off the pace last season as they finished third in the table.

The Gers are currently sitting third in the Scottish Premiership – five points behind leaders Celtic – and have not won a league game against their bitter rivals since an Ibrox triumph in March 2012.

Lambert joined Celtic in 1997 from Borussia Dortmund and went on to captain the Hoops in the 2003 UEFA Cup final defeat to Jose Mourinho’s Porto.

The former Aston Villa and Blackburn manager made 273 appearances, scoring 19 times, before ending his playing career at Livingston as he took his first steps in management.
