Celtic first teamer delivers emphatic verdict on future

By Derek Smithson

Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong has revealed that he is keen to stay with the club and that contract negotiations will sort themselves out in the near future.

The 25-year-old was a key part of the Bhoys’ domestic treble last season and was an ever-present in the starting line-up.

His performances have seen fans fear they could lose the Scotland international and that is not helped by the fact he has just one year remaining on his contract.

However, Armstrong has eased concerns by admitting that talks with the Scottish champions were always planned for the end of the season.

“That was something we talked about and decided to leave until the season was finished – then we could pick it up again,’ Armstrong said, as quoted by the Daily Mail. “We’ll take care of that soon. You know, you can never put a time limit on these things. I’ve said that before. These things usually take care of themselves.”

Armstrong was then asked whether he wants to extend his stay and gave an emphatic response.

“Yeah, I think it’s the happiest I’ve been in my footballing career. And I think that is showing on the park, as well. I’m very happy, playing well, playing probably the best football of my life. So it’s all good.”

Armstrong was transformed under Brendan Rodgers’ tutelage last season and reverted from a winger into a central midfielder.

He made 47 appearances across all competitions, scoring 17 goals and supplying seven assists in return.

His performances helped him earn a nominee for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award and he was certainly the lynchpin for Celtic’s success.

Manager Rodgers will be keen to keep hold of all his star players over the summer and has received a major boost over Armstrong’s future.
