Celtic and West Ham eyeing move for £9m-valued Euro striker – report
By Harvey Byrne
Celtic are eyeing a move for Lorient striker Waris Majeed, according to a report.
The Daily Mail have claimed on their website that the Hoops, West Ham, Fulham and Brighton are all weighing up an offer for the 25-year-old, who is said to be valued at around £9million.
It is detailed that Waris had a trial at English giants Manchester City as a teenager, while he also played at the Nike academy when studying at Hartpury College at 17.
However, he was unable to gain a work permit to sign for a professional club in the United Kingdom and he has since travelled across Europe to play for the likes of Lorient, BK Hacken, Trabzonspor, Valenciennes and Spartak Moscow.
Ligue 2 outfit Lorient are his current club after joining for a fee of £4.5million two years ago and he has since scored 23 goals in 65 matches in total for the French outfit.
Waris is still contracted to Lorient until 2020 and has been capped 25 times by the Ghana national team, scoring four goals, meaning a work permit may now be more obtainable.
Football Insider verdict:
Celtic are going to be linked with a number of strikers at the moment due to their clashes against Rosenborg which saw them start without both Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele across the two legs due to injury. However, Waris’ name is a slightly weird one for the club. The striker has not shown much ability in front of goal during his career and he certainly has not shown himself to be a £9million-rated player. Celtic don’t need to spend millions on a new striker with both Dembele and Griffiths in the team and they should certainly avoid Waris if that is what he is going to cost.
