Celtic idol can’t believe Alistair Johnston ‘revelation’ – ‘there’s no way’

Frank McAvennie wasn’t surprised by Alistair Johnston’s impressive defensive display for Celtic against Rangers last weekend (8 April).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Johnston has been a “revelation” since his arrival at Parkhead.

The 24-year-old was named man of the match in the Celts’ 3-2 derby win over Rangers on Saturday (8 April).

Taking to Twitter after the game, the right-back said “no feeling can ever match” being on the winning end of a Glasgow derby and being named man of the match in such an important victory.

The victory over their rivals moved the Hoops 12 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as they hunt down a treble.

The sides face off again at the end of the month in the Scottish Cup semi-final where the Light Blues will be hoping to edge closer to their first piece of silverware this season whilst Celtic look to complete another treble.

When asked if he was surprised by Johnston’s impressive defensive showing at Parkhead, McAvennie told Football Insider:We saw it at the World Cup so we have seen that he can defend.

Canada were backs to the wall and so you could see his defensive qualities.

I think he might have been looking at him before then because there is no way he just saw him in the World Cup.

All these wee mistakes that he has made he will learn from. He has been a revelation since he has come in.”
