Celtic idol drops ‘not fit for purpose’ claim after bid tabled – ‘it’s awful’

Celtic idol Frank McAvennie has claimed Hampden is not “fit for purpose” amid the UK and Ireland’s Euro 2028 bid.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Parkhead or Ibrox should be used ahead of the Scotland’s national stadium.

On Wednesday (12 April), the Scottish FA confirmed that the UK and Ireland have submitted a final bid to host the UEFA Euros in 2028.

Among the ten stadia, Hampden is the only Scottish venue proposed as a host stadium for the international competition.

The Glasgow stadium has come under fire recently after January’s Viaplay Cup semi-finals exposed problems with the condition of the pitch after playing two games in the space of two days.

When asked his assessment of Hampden being included as part of the bid, McAvennie told Football Insider:Hampden was the best place in the world when I was playing.

The atmosphere was superb, there were 80,000 fans in. Now it is only 40,000 or 50,000 and the atmosphere is not the same.

It is really only six games a year that are being played at Hampden and they can’t get it ready. I do not understand it.

The pitch needs to be made better because it is dangerous. It looks great to the cameras but when you go down to the pitch it is awful. Something has got to be done.

The three that should be used before Hampden are Celtic Park, Ibrox and Murrayfield. I do not think Hampden is fit for purpose.

I know it is the national stadium but get it sorted or we won’t play there.
