Celtic idol issues ‘dangerous’ verdict as controversial Callum McGregor footage analysed

Frank McAvennie has praised referee Kevin Clancy for the red cards issued at Celtic Park on Sunday (21 August).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Hearts manager Robbie Neilson’s complaints about the referee were unwarranted.

Ange Postecoglou’s side beat the Jam Tarts 2-0 at Parkhead.

As shown on Sky Sports (21 August), Hearts’ Alex Cochrane was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Callum McGregor.

Toby Sibbick was also sent off for a second bookable offence after a foul on Liel Abada.

As quoted by PLZ Soccer (21 August), Robbie Neilson criticised the referee’s decision to award the red cards and claimed his side were treated unfairly.

McAvennie is adamant Clancy made the right calls throughout the game.

There’s certain things that referees do and don’t do,” he told Football Insider.

They’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t. There’s a lot of mistakes from referees, I don’t have a problem with that. When it’s blatant week in week out, I’m not too happy with that.

Willie Collum has made a lot of mistakes before that have gone against Celtic. So you’ve just got to get on with it.

You’re on a booking you can’t tackle like that. For the first foul on [Josip] Juranovic, he basically climbed all over him, holding his neck and in the second one he came in really dangerously.

Players know when they’ve done something wrong and he [Cochrane] knew straight away he was going to be sent off.
