Celtic idol issues ‘win-win’ verdict after Stephen Welsh transfer update via Sky
Frank McAvennie has claimed Celtic should allow Stephen Welsh to leave the club on loan this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Hoops striker said the 22-year-old won’t be first choice for Ange Postecoglou next season but a loan move could help him move up the pecking order.
According to Sky Sports (24 July), French Ligue 1 side Toulouse have made an enquiry about a permanent move for the centre-half.
The Scot currently has three years remaining on his contract at Parkhead.
McAvennie is adamant the Scottish Champions should try to secure a loan move for the defender.
“A loan move would be great,” he told Football Insider correspondent Charlotte Cohen.
“If he goes over there and hits the ground running, he can get European experience, it’s a win-win for Celtic.
“At this moment in time, he’s not going to be first choice for me, and I don’t think he’ll be first choice for the manager so a loan deal would be ideal.
“If he wants to stay at Celtic and he wants to fight for his place then he’s got to go on loan and tie down a first team place wherever he goes.

“Then he can come back and make sure he’s involved in the centre-half situation. A loan deal would be good for him but I think they want to sell him.
“I think one way or the other they’ve got to sell him. He’s got to go and play his football somewhere else.“
