Celtic idol worried about VAR after what he’s spotted – ‘it’s scary’
Frank McAvennie is worried about the use of VAR in games between Celtic and Rangers this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said it will be “scary” if there are any penalty claims in matches between the Glasgow rivals.
Although initially due to come into play after the World Cup, VAR was introduced in the Scottish top flight this month after almost three years of planning, development and testing.
Celtic have already experienced controversy from the technology in their first game using the technology.
The Hoops were not awarded a penalty in their game against Hearts last weekend (22 October), despite claims for a handball against defender Michael Smith.
Speaking to Sky Sports (22 October), Ange Postecoglou has already made his frustrations over the technology clear, stating he would “much prefer” if it wasn’t involved “at all”.
McAvennie is worried about how the technology will be used in the Glasgow derby matches.
“It is going to be scary when Celtic and Rangers are playing each other,” he told Football Insider.

“If there is a penalty claim at one end and say Celtic go up the park and scored then it goes to VAR and they say it is a penalty to Rangers. My god there will be hell to pay.
“It should not be that, there should not be these stupid rules. It just shows that it is people who have never played the game coming up with the rules. So I am not a fan of VAR.“
In other news, McManus has lambasted VAR as Celtic centre of controversial development – ‘this keeps happening’.
