Celtic star must be axed for clash v Rangers and cannot complain about it
COMMENT
Leigh Griffiths made his return to the Celtic side in the Boxing Day win over Dundee, scoring the second goal in the 2-0 win that took the Hoops 11 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Despite his scoring return, the former Hibernian star must be axed to the bench for the upcoming Old Firm derby against Rangers at Celtic Park on Saturday – and the player can’t really complain about.
Griffiths hasn’t been in the best of form this season. He started off very well, and in September scored in memorable victories over Anderlecht and Rangers, but since then he’s been a bit-part player.
Brendan Rodgers has been playing Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard recently in place of the Scotland international, and his reasons make sense.
Dembele is by far Parkhead’s best striker, so he is bound to start most games whilst fit, while Edouard is on-loan until the end of the season and the Hoops need to make a decision on signing him to a permanent deal.
Despite losing his place in the side Griffiths shouldn’t be too down-hearted, as there is a good chance he could regain his role as main striker if Dembele leaves Celtic in January.
But for now, it looks like Celtic star Griffiths will have to be content with making cameo appearances for the Scottish champions.
