Celtic must seal deal for eight-goal stand-out performer if the price is right
COMMENT
Celtic may well be closing in on a permanent deal on 20-year-old striker Odsonne Edouard – but they should only complete the deal at the right price.
For a long time it was thought that a deal to sign the Frenchman from PSG was in place for £7million, but as reported by the Herald, Rodgers claims that isn’t the case.
Edouard, who has nine goals so far this season, has been a stand-out performer at times for the Hoops, most recently in the 3-2 win over Rangers where he scored the winning goal.
A price tag of £7million did seem like a lot of money for a player just starting in his career, but with the way the transfer market is going the quoted figure did not come as much of a surprise.
However, now that Rodgers has poured cold water on that aspect, the Hoops may well be more inclined to consider a permanent deal, after impressing with eight goals this season.
Around £3million should be enough to get the deal done for the player, who was shown plenty of potential but is still very raw.
If he goes on to do well at the Hoops there is always the possibility that the club can pull in a huge transfer fee for the player when he eventually leaves, which is what Rodgers and the Hoops board will be considering.
With Moussa Dembele’s future also unclear, it would make sense to get a deal for Edouard done quickly, as he could well replace his fellow Frenchman in July’s Champions League qualifiers should Dembele leave the club.
