Celtic news: Expert issues Carl Starfelt fear after update

Stretchering Celtic star Carl Starfelt off the pitch may have been purely “precautionary” with the defender likely to be sidelined for less than six weeks.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Starfelt was replaced before half-time during Sweden’s clash with Slovenia last week (2 June) after suffering a suspected hamstring injury.

The Celtic ace confirmed via Instagram (4 June) that the problem will keep him out of this month’s remaining internationals fixtures.

Dinnery claimed the injury may not be the “worst case scenario” despite the 27-year-old’s inability to leave the field under his own steam.

He urged Starfelt to get some “much-needed rest” over the next 28 days.

“Severity is the key here,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“It’s never good when you see players who are stretchered off or using protective boots post-match – but it can be best to take precautionary measures.

“You’ve got to wait for imaging, tests, and scans in order to determine the problem.

“Don’t necessarily read too much into what you see visually until that further assessment has been undertaken.

“Just because he was stretchered off doesn’t mean it’s a worst-case scenario.

“If we’re talking a grade one tear, as a rule of thumb – he could be out for two to three weeks. If it’s a bit more severe, he could be out four to six weeks.

“It’s a good period for Starfelt to get some much-needed rest.

“The hamstring has a high risk of re-injury, particularly within the first 28 days – so he’s got a good opportunity to kick back now ahead of the pre-season.”
