Celtic news: Giorgos Giakoumakis hailed after ‘amazing’ Old Firm footage emerges – pundit

Noel Whelan has hailed Celtic striker Giorgos Giakoumakis for his “amazing” display during the 2-1 win over Rangers on Sunday (3 April).

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 27-year-old was a “thorn in the side” of the Gers throughout the contest.

As per SofaScore, Giakoumakis created one big chance, made three clearances, two key passes and won eight duels during the crucial win.

As seen in footage from BhoysAnalytics on Twitter, the Greek striker even dropped into his side’s 18-yard-box to repel a cross that would have presented Kemar Roofe with a golden opportunity to level.

Giakoumakis scored five goals in the month of March after initially struggling to make an impact following his Celtic arrival last summer (2021).

Whelan hailed the striker for managing his emotions after picking up a yellow card early in the second half.

“He was a thorn in their side all game,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He worked so hard, held the ball up, was aggressive – it was amazing to watch. Giakoumakis was a player who was bang up for the game.

“It will be difficult to manage your emotions in an Old Firm derby, but he managed that.

“He defended really well, too. Not only does he provide the quality in the right areas when they need it, but he puts the hard graft in too.”

Giakoumakis has netted 12 goals in 23 appearances for Celtic since signing for a reported £2.1million.
