Finance Guru: Celtic fans won’t carry out season ticket threat amid 50% revenue reveal

Matchday takings usually account for 50% of Celtic’s overall revenue and Celtic supporters are too loyal to harm the club by voting with their feet.

That is according to finance expert and new Football Insider columnist Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively with the season ticket renewal window just around the corner.

Celtic rolled out their renewal campaign in March last year and are expected to do the same this season.

The landscape has shifted dramatically from this time last year, however, both in terms of Celtic’s success on the pitch and the economic environment off it.

Maguire reiterated how important matchday revenue is to Celtic and said he doesn’t expect to see a major drop-off in renewals despite threats from a section of fans they will not buy season tickets.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “Scottish football is strange in the sense that it has the highest proportion of money coming from ticket sales of practically any league in Europe.

“If we take a look at Celtic, they get 50 per cent of their revenue coming through the turnstiles.

“If season ticket renewals are poor, they do have a waiting list. I don’t think that one disappointing season will have too bad an impact. Let’s put it in context, they’ve won a trophy and probably going to finish second.

“Lots of people will threaten to cancel their season tickets but when it comes to the crunch, relatively few will carry that out.”

A Parkhead overhaul is widely-expected in the summer as Peter Lawwell’s 17-year reign as Celtic Chief Executive draws to a close.

The Hoops trail Rangers by 18 points in the Scottish Premiership and exited the Europa League at the group stage back in December.

In other news, a top pundit says the emergence of an exciting young talent at Celtic has given the club newfound confidence.
