Celtic news: McAvennie ‘can’t believe’ Brendan Rodgers sack latest after what he’s seen

Frank McAvennie has suggested Brendan Rodgers should not be sacked as Celtic manager because his squad isn’t “anywhere near good enough”.

The former Celtic and Scotland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, urged the 51-year-old to mix up his team selection to include the likes of Tomoki Iwata and Maik Nawrocki.

The Hoops are now trailing rivals Rangers in the race for the Scottish Premiership title.

Celtic drew 1-1 against Kilmarnock last time out (17 February) to give the Ibrox club a two-point advantage in the league table.

Rodgers has been forced to compete without the likes of injured duo Reo Hatate and Cameron Carter-Vickers in recent weeks.

Celtic squad ‘nowhere good enough’ – it’s ‘unbelievable’, says expert

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (20 February) that the ex-Leicester boss is unhappy with the transfer business at Celtic since his return to the club last summer.

McAvennie told Football Insider: “You can blame everyone for this run of form.

“I don’t know who could come in instead of Rodgers and get the results. Who are they bringing in to replace him at this stage of the season?

“Celtic need Hatate, they need Carter-Vickers back. Get them back, and they’ve got a chance.

“But some of the players Rodgers has got are not anywhere near good enough.

“I don’t know why he doesn’t play Iwata. He’s a defensive midfielder who doesn’t give the ball away – he’s never let Celtic down.

“I don’t know why Nawrocki isn’t playing, because they’ve paid big money for him. He’s got to be better than Scales and Welsh.

“It’s unbelievable. He’s got to play his best side – because some of the fringe players aren’t good enough.”
