Celtic news: McAvennie savages new boy Nicolas Kuhn – ‘what are you doing?’

Frank McAvennie has slammed Celtic new boy Nicolas Kuhn and the club’s other wingers for their lack of cutting-edge in wide areas.

The former Celtic and Scotland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Hoops are just “passing it backwards and sideways” in dangerous areas rather than playing at pace.

Brendan Rodgers’ squad contains wingers like Luis Palma, Hyun-jun Yang and Daizen Maeda – with Kuhn arriving to bolster the ranks in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old German joined from Rapid Vienna, signing a five-and-a-half-year deal at Parkhead.

6ft 3in striker Adam Idah also joined Celtic in January to provide a focal point for the Hoops’ attacks, with Kyogo Furuhashi moving into a deeper role in recent games.

Celtic must play like Man City, says McAvennie

However, McAvennie has not been impressed with the Hoops’ use of Idah and lays the blame at the door of the wingers.

He told Football Insider: “It feels like Celtic have got about 17 or 18 wingers, but none of them can get to the byline and cross the ball.

“The new boy Kuhn came in last week, but all he did was pass it backwards.

“I’m thinking – ‘what are you doing?’

“He’s got ability, there’s no doubt. But just getting the ball and passing backwards, I could do that.

“You’ve got to do something, you can’t just wait for something to happen.

“They just seem to be passing it backwards and sideways at the moment, and I don’t think that’s Brendan’s fault.

“Everything you do in football has got to be at a pace now. You see Man City, everything is at pace.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers frustrated on the touchline at Parkhead

“When Celtic go forward, the defence is just stood there. They aren’t moving the defenders.

“The wingers have got to get the ball in the box, they aren’t doing anything at the moment.”
