Celtic news: Postecoglou told to drop two big names by ‘worried’ expert
Frank McAvennie claims the Celtic defence looks “jaded” after struggling to keep clean sheets in recent games.
The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has admitted he is worried about his former side’s recent performances.
Celtic crashed out of the Europa Conference League on Thursday (24 February), losing the second leg of their tie with Bodo/Glimt 2-0.
This came after the Hoops lost the first leg 3-1 and conceded two goals in a win over Dundee on Sunday (20 February).
McAvennie has not been impressed with Celtic’s defending and suggested virtual ever-presents Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers need a rest.
“We look good going forward but I’m worried about the defence,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I will always be honest. When the players are doing well I will praise them up but when they are making mistakes I will point it out.
“For me, in the last few games, the defence has looked jaded. That can happen.
“When that happens, great teams still manage to grind out a result.
“We saw that at the weekend when it took a Giakoumakis hattrick to win the game because the defence weren’t at it.
“That’s a worry for me. I would rather win 1-0 than 3-2 all day.
“The two centre-backs have barely changed all season so maybe they need a bit of a rest.”

Celtic are next in action against Hibernian on Sunday (27 February).
They remain three points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
