Celtic news: Rangers TV pundit makes VAR claim as controversial Cameron Carter-Vickers footage analysed

Alan Hutton has insisted Scottish clubs need to vote in favour of implementing VAR after Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers got away with a shirt pull in Sunday’s win over Rangers.

The former Gers defender and Rangers TV pundit, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old was “lucky” to avoid not giving a penalty away.

In footage captured by BBC Scotland’s Sportscene (3 March, 28:15), Carter-Vickers can be seen pulling Connor Goldson’s shirt while defending a corner.

The Celtic defender went unpunished, with Kenny Miller stating it was a “stonewall” penalty.

As confirmed by the SPFL on Monday (4 April), Scottish clubs will vote over implementing VAR later this month.

Hutton insisted teams should be in favour to avoid controversial decisions like on Sunday.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “Obviously he’s [Carter-Vickers] lucky. If you are ever in the box and you pull someone back, you pull a shirt, you run the risk of giving away a penalty.

“That’s where all the call for the VAR comes from. I think they’re going to vote on it in the upcoming weeks for Scottish football.

“Personally, I think it’s a good thing if they can bring it in. It just takes that grey area away. I know it’s still subjective depending on which view you look at.

“But I think it makes it a little bit more clear. Again, if you pull somebody back in the box, you’re always running the risk.”
