Kieran Maguire: Celtic have ‘strategic advantage’ over Rangers after behind-the-scenes SPFL news

Celtic now have the insider track on decision-making in the SPFL after the appointment of Michael Nicholson to the league’s board.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the reshuffle at the top of Scottish football.

As relayed by the Daily Record on Monday (18 July), Nicholson has been elected as the newest member of the SPFL board.

He replaces outgoing Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson as one of three club representatives on the board.

Nicholson has been CEO at Parkhead since the departure of Dominic McKay, whom he originally replaced on an interim basis before he was installed permanently.

Maguire explains how Nicholson’s presence on the SPFL board will give the 2021-22 Scottish Premiership champions a “strategic advantage” when it comes to dictating policy.

“Michael Nicholson will now have the inside track in terms of decision making,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“It can certainly help to nudge the club in one direction, whichever direction that might be. So, I would argue that it is definitely a strategic advantage.

“It can also ensure that the club’s decision making is in alignment with decisions being made at league level, which helps to make things streamlined.”
