Desmond deserves ‘huge credit’ as three new signings may take Celtic spending to ‘£30m’ – Kenny

Celtic powerbroker Dermot Desmond deserves “huge credit” for backing the club to the tune of “almost £30million” this summer.

So says ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider with the 31 August transfer deadline just hours away.

Celtic have spent close to £20m on nine permanent recruits this summer and a source has updated to Football Insider to reveal at least two signings are set to be sealed today with the potential for one more.

Filipe Jota, 22, has undergone a medical ahead of an initial loan deal that could become permanent for £6.5m at the end of the season.

The Benfica winger is to be joined by Greek striker Georgios Giakoumakis, who has undergone a medical ahead of a £2.5m switch from VVV-Venlo.

A centre-back, most likely on loan, could also be added to the ranks.

Kenny predicts that this could take their total summer spend to £30m, and the Hoops board deserve praise for backing Ange Postecoglou to the hilt.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “We’ve seen what’s happened with Covid and the finances in the UK and around the world.

“Celtic, they are probably going to spend almost £30m. You have to say fair play to the board and Dermot Desmond.

“They had to invest to make sure they didn’t fall behind at Rangers and it’s good to see them go back into the market.

“I’m sure the manager knew before he took the job that he’d get that backing because that squad needed strengthening.

“Rangers ran away with it last season so something needed to change, and you have to say huge credit to the board for that.”
