Brendan Rodgers must act in January after recruitment expert makes £27m Celtic claim

COMMENT

Recent comments by a recruitment expert have given an indication that Celtic are preparing to sell star striker Moussa Dembele in January.

Scottish football expert Ian McGarry, who used to be the chief football reporter at both the Sun and the Daily Mail, speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, claims that the Hoops are planning to sell the player for £27million, with the likes of West Ham and Everton interested in snapping him up.

That can’t really be argued with, it would be a record transfer fee for Scotland and would set the Hoops up for the future.

However, McGarry also claims that the Hoops are willing to let one of their top players leave in January as they are “well sorted for strikers” for the rest of the season.

That claim is undermined when you consider that Leigh Griffiths has only scored two goals for the Hoops in his last 13 appearances and Odsonne Edouard is still very young without a lot of first-team football.

A replacement for Dembele – particularity one who is not cup-tied for the Europa League – one would make sense, as it would lessen the blow of such an important player leaving the club, and it would get the fans onside with the decision.

If the 21-year-old is sold and no replacement is brought in, Celtic’s supporters will be furious, especially if costs the Hoops the chance to have a good run in the Europa League.

If the transfer is sanctioned, surely Brendan Rodgers and the board at Celtic Park would have a replacement in mind for Dembele. If not, that would seem like a needless gamble to take.
