Celtic reject Asmir Begovic as they work on signing top keeper – sources

Celtic are planning to swoop for a long-term number-one goalkeeper in the upcoming summer window, sources have told Football Insider.

The Hoops have been linked with QPR shot-stopper Asmir Begovic, 36, as he prepares to leave Loftus Road on a free transfer in June.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements for current first-choice goalkeeper Joe Hart, who is retiring at the end of the 2023-24 campaign.

But it is believed the Glasgow giants want to bring in a top quality, long-term option who is committed to remaining at Parkhead for multiple years.

At 36, Begovic is not at the peak of his powers and does not fit that criteria after a tough season with QPR in the Championship.

Celtic unlikely to launch free transfer swoop for QPR star Begovic

According to FBRef, he ranks towards the bottom of second-tier goalkeepers for goals prevented and has recorded a save percentage of just 68.5% this term.

Begovic joined QPR from Everton last summer (2023) and has turned out in the Premier League for the Toffees, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Stoke and Portsmouth.

He has racked up 256 total games in the top flight, keeping 64 clean sheets.

The 6ft 6in shot-stopper made 63 appearances for Bosnia and Herzegovina before retiring from international duty in 2020.

Celtic

Football Insider revealed on 23 April that Celtic, Southampton and PSV Eindhoven are plotting moves to sign Austrian goalkeeper Patrick Pentz.

The 27-year-old is on loan at Brondby from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.
