Celtic star feared out for months could be back ‘in a week’ – expert

Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers may be back in a week rather than months after picking up an injury ahead of their 5-2 win over Falkirk on Sunday (September 22).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, ex-Celtic forward Frank McAvennie is hopeful the 26-year-old’s metatarsal injury isn’t as bad as first feared but admits he’s not sure of the severity.

Carter-Vickers didn’t feature in Celtic’s come-back Scottish League Cup win over Falkirk, with fellow USA International Auston Trusty stepping up to the plate instead.

Speaking to Premier Sports after the game, manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed the centre-back has been struggling with the injury, saying, “Cam has been suffering a wee bit with his metatarsal, below his big toe. We gave it a little bit of a period earlier on, a few weeks back, and he was okay.”

“He’s got a little bit sore, obviously playing back-to-back games, which is why we’ve given him today free. So, we’ll just assess that and see how that is later in the week.”

The defender has been a wall for Celtic so far this season, helping them to five wins from five games without conceding a single goal.

Paulo Bernardo’s first goal of the season and braces from Adam Idah and Nicolas Kuhn were enough to see the Glasgow side past Falkirk.

“I don’t know how bad it is, there are different ways you can hurt your metatarsal”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“It’s going to depend on how bad it is, they won’t tell you, not a chance they’ll tell you but it could be just a week or so which would be alright.

“If he’s not playing at the weekend he’ll play Trusty and Scales, two left-sided unless he puts Nawrocki on, he’s brought Nawrocki back into the fold which I was pleased to see.

“You can never have too many centre halves so I was pleased to see that, it’s going to be a long hard season and I think everyone is going to get used well.

“The future is bright as they say.”
