Griffiths drops Twitter hint about winding up Rangers fans in clash v Celtic

By James Black

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has joked he could wind up Rangers fans after next weekend’s Old Firm game.

The striker tied a Celtic scarf to the Ibrox goalposts after last December’s win over the Gers and hinted he could do it again when the sides meet for the first time this season next Saturday.

Griffith did the same after games against Hearts and Linfield – landing himself a one-match ban from UEFA for inciting the Northern Irish side’s fans after an ill-tempered Champions League qualifier.

The Scotland striker also laid a scarf on the penalty spot at Ibrox after beating the Gers there in April but after picking up a UEFA ban, it was expected Griffiths had retired the stunt.

“You’re in the cupboard until next Sat” Griffiths said on Twitter in response to a parody account named LeighGriffithsScarf.

After UEFA took disciplinary action against the player in July, the Scottish FA may have their hand forced if Griffiths repeats it at Ibrox.

The 27-year-old missed the third qualifying round first-leg against Rosenborg as a result as UEFA took a dim view of the prank.

“After the game I took things a bit too far and the ban was fair enough,” Griffiths said after being suspended by UEFA, as quoted at the time by the Scottish Sun.

“I’ve done that at Ibrox and Tynecastle and nothing was said.

“But looking back now, it was stupid and bang out of order, and I won’t be doing it again.”
Griffiths played 70 minutes for Brendan Rodgers side against Paris Saint-Germain as the Hoops were demolished 5-0 by the big-spending French side in midweek.

The Scottish Premiership leaders face Ross County later today in their final game before they make the short trip to Ibrox to face Rangers.

So far this season, Griffith has scored five goals in ten appearances as the Hoops attempt to lift a seventh successive Scottish Premiership title.

Last season, the former Hibs striker grabbed 18 goals in 38 games as he helped Brendan Rodgers’ side to an unbeaten domestic treble.
