Celtic suffer ‘big’ injustice after Sead Haksabanovic footage reanalysed – expert

Lewis Mayo’s tackle in Celtic winger Sead Haksabanovic was a “stonewall penalty”.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops striker Frank McAvennie couldn’t believe referee Alan Muir wasn’t told to review the incident.

Haksabanovic went down inside the box in the final minutes of the Celts’ Viaplay Cup clash against Kilmarnock last weekend with the holders trailing a goal.

The onfield official waved away shouts of a penalty and the VAR official did not feel the decision needed to be overturned.

Even former Rangers star Barry Ferguson felt the Hoops were hard done by.

As quoted by footballscotland (21 August), Ferguson insisted Haksabanovic should have had a penalty and claimed he would have been “raging” if he was in the Celtic winger’s position.

Brendan Rodgers’ side went on to lose the game and exit the cup before the quarter-final stage.

McAvennie couldn’t believe the referee didn’t award the spot kick.

He [Haksabanovic] should have had a penalty,” he told Football Insider.

It was a stonewall penalty. I can’t understand why the referee was not told to look at it.

Even Barry Ferguson who is a big Rangers man said it was a stonewall penalty.

They wonder why people get upset about VAR. The referee could have missed it, there were a lot of bodies in the way but VAR should not have missed it. That is not me being annoyed because they got beat, it was a stonewall penalty.
