Celtic tipped for tactical switch Rangers ‘won’t be able to handle’ after update – pundit

Celtic could start two strikers against Rangers in a tactical “mix up” with Kyogo Furuhashi nearing a return.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider ahead of April’s three Old Firm gams.

Giorgios Giakoumakis, 27, bagged a hattrick against Ross County in the Premiership on 19 March and also scored a brace against Dundee United in the Scottish Cup on 14 March.

This took his tally of Hoops goals to 12 in 22 outings since joining the club in the summer of 2021.

This came after McAvennie told this site on 18 March that Furuhashi will return for April’s three games against Rangers, as per “people who know.”

He now hopes the Hoops start the two strikers against Rangers as their rivals “won’t be able to handle that”.

“I was concerned for Giakoumakis, especially in January when Maeda arrived,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“But talk about taking your chances. He’s one of the first names on the team sheet now.

“He had a bit of a rough start up here, missing that last-minute penalty.

“But he has bounced back so well. Now Celtic have three proper strikers to choose from.

“I’m wondering if we could mix it up against Rangers and play with two up top.

“Rangers won’t be able to handle that. I don’t think Ange will do it, it’s not his style.

“But I would love to see it and I think it could happen. With three strikers fit we can afford to do it.”

As quoted by the Glasgow Times on Monday (21 March), Furuhasi revealed, “I am in very good condition and feel I will be back soon.”

He netted 16 goals and supplied five assists in 26 appearances before his injury.
