Celtic tipped to complete ‘three marquee signings’ – if Brendan Rodgers is sacked

Former Aberdeen chief Keith Wyness has backed Celtic to make “three marquee signings” this summer – but only if their long-term managerial situation is sorted.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested Brendan Rodgers’ could be sacked, with his replacement being given a mandate to overhaul the squad.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (12 March) that Celtic are prioritising three positions as they lay the groundwork for a huge summer overhaul.

It is believed a new goalkeeper, winger and striker are on the shopping list for club chiefs ahead of the 2024-25 season.

However, manager Rodgers is under pressure at Parkhead following a collapse in the Scottish Premiership title race which now sees them two points behind Rangers.

Wyness issues ‘marquee’ signing verdict at Celtic

Wyness suggested the ex-Leicester boss could be sacked if the Hoops fail to win the league – with his replacement set to get the chance to remould the squad.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think they would go for those three new marquee signings, but it would probably come under a new manager.

“They’ve got to get the manager situation sorted first.

“Celtic have got the resources to support their manager, but they’ve got to find out where they stand and back him.

“It could be a new manager, or it could even be Brendan Rodgers if he manages to win the league.

“It’s on a knife edge at the moment as we see the outcome of this title race.

“It’s Champions League or nothing for Celtic, that’s for sure. If you’re not first, you’re nowhere. It’s a very tough market and you’ve got to win.”
