Celtic to ‘pull the trigger’ on some ‘expensive’ signings in title bid

Celtic will open up the chequebook in the summer transfer window if they fail to win the Scottish Premiership title.

That is according to football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, who has exclusively told Football Insider his view on Celtic‘s business in the January window.

The Hoops have only made two loan signings in the January window so far, despite the club’s strong financial accounts.

Celtic fans criticised the board for their lack of transfer spending last summer, and the Glasgow club are currently six points behind Hearts in the league table.

Celtic backed to make ‘summer moves’

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley is not surprised to see Celtic have not had a busy January window.

“No I’m not surprised,” Plumley said.

“Historically, January tends to be a little bit quieter anyway. I think it’s going to be an interesting kind of next few months to consider because, as I say, a lot will depend on where the title ends up.

“And if Hearts manage to puncture, you know, to puncture that dominance of Celtic and Rangers, both of those clubs will be hurting because of that, and you might see some reaction.

There’s also, of course, what Rangers will then do, because we know Danny Rohl will be aggressive, and he’ll look to invest and, you know, he’s been asking for people or for players already in January, so Rangers might go on the offensive a little bit.

“So, yes, Celtic might feel like they have to make moves in the summer. It’s probably more of a six months down the line of looking at the next kind of two to three years, rather than, you know, right now pulling the trigger on some, what would be, fairly expensive transfer fees, and there’s no guarantee they will come off anyway.”

Celtic target new striker

Celtic announced the loan signing of Tomas Cvancara from Borussia Monchengladbach, but the club still want to add to their attacking options.

Chelsea are willing to sell striker David Datro Fofana, which has caught the attention of Celtic and a possible late move.

The 23-year-old has only made four first team appearances for Chelsea, and has spent this season so far on loan at Fatih Karagumruk in Turkey.
