Celtic told Mahamadou Diawara offer will be accepted – O’Rourke

Celtic could sign Lyon central midfielder Mahamadou Diawara in the upcoming January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the 19-year-old is a player the Hoops “like and admire.”

The Scottish giants have tried to get him on a loan deal with an obligation to buy, and Lyon’s current financial situation has given the club more encouragement that they could sign him.

Diawara himself is interested in a move away from the French outfit in a bid to gain more regular playing time, while Lyon might have to accept if they receive a decent offer for his services.

There are question marks over whether or not Diawara would be ready to start immediately for Celtic, but he would bolster the squad.

Diawara could also be tempted by the move to Parkhead if there is European football on offer for the second half of the campaign.

Brendan Rodgers wants to strengthen his Celtic squad

Rodgers is hoping to strengthen his squad to continue competing on all fronts, but Football Insider revealed that he is unlikely to be given the finances to do so in January.

That is one of the reasons behind Celtic driving a youth policy in recent times, focusing on finding younger talent who can blossom into bigger stars down the line.

However, Rodgers has made it clear he wants to strengthen his attacking options in January as he looks to bring in more firepower.

Diawara has only played five times this season for Lyon in all competitions, with his minutes being limited.

Only one of those matches has led to him playing a full 90 minutes, with a move to Celtic being something that could benefit his career.
