Celtic told to complete defender signing today as Osaze Urhoghide heads to KV Oostende – McAvennie

Frank McAvennie has urged Celtic to sign a new face at centre-back as the transfer deadline approaches.

The former Hoops striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Ange Postecoglou’s side “lack depth” at centre-half.

According to the Scotsman (30 January), Celtic defender Osaze Urhoghide, 21, is close to a loan move to KV Oostende and has jetted out to Belgium to put pen to paper.

The youngster’s imminent departure leaves Postecoglou with five options at centre-back, including Christopher Jullien – who is yet to return from injury.

McAvennie claimed the lack of defensive options is a “worry” for Celtic.

“I do think Celtic need a new centre-back,” he told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

Jullien still isn’t back, and as good as Carter-Vickers and Starfelt have been recently, it’s the one place we lack a bit of depth.

There have been links with some defenders, obviously we’ve lost John Souttar to Rangers.

That’s the one signing I would really like before the window shuts. That would give me a bit more confidence.

I’m happy with the attack and midfield, we are well covered there. The defence does worry me a bit. Fingers crossed we can do something.”

Souttar penned a pre-contract agreement at Rangers earlier this month, ending a protracted transfer tug-of-war between the Old Firm rivals.
