Celtic told to complete ‘unbelievable’ three-year deal – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged Celtic to tie Ange Postecoglou down to a “two or three-year deal” despite the Australian downplaying the importance of a new contract.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 56-year-old did an “unbelievable” job during his first season at Parkhead.

Postecoglou, who lifted the Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Premiership in the 2021-22 campaign, is currently signed to a one-year rolling contract but has expressed his desire to remain in Scotland.

Speaking to Australian outlet Sportsday (2 June), he insisted Celtic is “everything I’ve ever wanted in a football club” and revealed that he is “very happy” at the club.

When asked about a potential long-term deal, Postecoglou said he isn’t “worried about that” as long-term contracts mean “absolute jack” in coaching.

Whelan insisted a new deal is important as it would allow the Australian more freedom of expression in the transfer market.

“I think you always want that security in place with a manager,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“That way, he knows he has the backing to go into the transfer market and build the club over a number of seasons.

“He had a fantastic season and shut up a lot of doubters. I was one of them – I had no idea who he was when he came in.

“It was shambolic at the time, but he’s had an unbelievable first season – his transfer business has been spot on.

“He’s in a really strong position.

“I’m sure all the Celtic fans would love it if he signed a two or three-year deal.
