Celtic told to make wholesale changes after ‘nightmare’ development – expert

Celtic need to make wholesale changes to their backline following continued poor defensive performances.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Hoops and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie blasted both Liam Scales and Stephen Welsh and urged Brendan Rodgers to play Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke instead.

While Celtic have won eight of their last 11 league games, they have not managed a clean sheet in their last six amid growing concerns about the ability of their defenders.

While Cameron Carter-Vickers has returned to the fray, he has been far from his best amid continued injury issues.

McAvennie “concerned” with state of Celtic defence

McAvennie claimed that Celtic can’t depend solely on the USMNT star and must sign a backup, but was adamant that the current profile of the defence needs adjusting.

“I don’t think Celtic can rely on Carter-Vickers,” he told Football Insider.

“I think he’s been in and out too much.

“His situation with injuries has been worrying.

“Why isn’t Narwrocki playing? He got injured but then we’ve not seen him.

“I would also say that Lagerbielke is better than Scales and Welsh.

“These are international players we’re talking about here and they’re not playing.

“The defence is getting pulled apart and they’re getting a hard time from the fan – it’s a nightmare.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looking stern

“I’m very concerned about that defence.

“If we go to Ibrox with that, I wouldn’t fancy us.”
