Celtic told to sign defender after source’s ‘significant’ reveal – McAvennie

Frank McAvennie has suggested Celtic need to sign another centre-half.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said Ange Postecoglou should send Stephen Welsh on loan and bring in another central defender.

Carl Starfelt returned to full training for the Hoops ahead of their Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday (25 October).

The 27-year-old picked up a knee injury in the Celts’ 4-0 win over Rangers last month (3 September).

Cameron Carter-Vickers has also just recently returned from an injury he picked up before last month’s international break.

On Tuesday (25 October), sources told this site that Celtic have put aside “significant” cash to facilitate a central midfielder signing in January.

Ange Postecoglou has made it clear that he wants to strengthen the squad in the new year and has the backing of the board to do so.

As quoted by the Scotsman (18 October), the Green and Whites boss said the side’s planning for the January window is already “well underway”.

The Australian said the club is aiming to get their business done early in the window.

McAvennie suggested the Hoops should be looking to strengthen the back line heading into the new year.

Celtic

I think he could bring in another centre-half,” he told Football Insider.

We need three or four centre-halves. If he thinks Starfelt and Welsh are good back-ups then fine. I think Welsh will be out on loan to get more game time. If he wants to keep Welsh, he needs games.
