Celtic transfer news: Keith Wyness can’t believe ‘surprising’ Parkhead latest

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted he is “surprised” to see Celtic leave their major transfer business so late.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed there will be a “chance to do one or two blockbuster signings” but conceded it could be “a bit late”.

Celtic are expected to be active in the final days of the transfer window, which shuts at 11pm on Friday (30 August), after selling Matt O’Riley to Brighton for a club-record fee.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have welcomed five new signings this summer, including Adam Idah and Kasper Schmeichel.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (26 August) that Celtic are pushing to bring LAFC star Mateusz Bogusz and Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels to the club before the deadline.

Sources have also told Football Insider that the Glasgow giants have seen an opening £5million bid for Sheffield United’s Auston Trusty rejected.

Celtic board to blame with Wyness ‘surprised’ by last-gasp transfer moves

Wyness claimed the Celtic board have been “too tight in releasing the purse strings”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s probably a bit late for Celtic to make the big purchases now.

“They should’ve had those deals wrapped up already.

“They knew the O’Riley money was coming in.

“It now becomes a bit late for Celtic to make those impactful signings, and this is what the fans have been complaining about.

“The board have been too tight in releasing the purse strings.

“However, there could be a chance to do one or two blockbuster signings. Rodgers will always be keen to improve his squad.

“The new format is an exciting chance for Celtic and I know Rodgers is keen to avenge the poor performance last season.

“It’s not too late but they’re going to have to roll the dice this week.

“O’Riley was always going to go, so I’m surprised that Celtic haven’t moved quicker and wrapped up a couple more signings.”
