‘Madness’ – Celtic fans rage as attacker is omitted for clash v Anderlecht
By James Black
Celtic take on Anderlecht tonight in the Champions League and fans are unhappy that French attacker Moussa Dembele has been omitted from the starting XI – with one fan calling it ‘madness’.
The Frenchman is making his comeback from a calf injury but has only been given a place on the bench for the crunch tie with the Belgians in Brussels.
Celtic confirmed the team news on their official Twitter account prior to kick-off.
The 21-year-old was Celtic’s top scorer last season after his move from Fulham and was linked with moves to some of Europe’s biggest clubs after an outstanding debut season.
Instead of Dembele, Leigh Griffiths continues as the Hoops’ lone striker as they look to pick up their first points of the Champions League group stages.
Celtic are on a 57-game unbeaten run domestically but haven’t been so successful in Europe so far after losing both of their last two games.
Although it is no doubt a strong team for the Bhoys, fans were raging that Dembele missed out on the starting line-up.
Here are some of their comments on Twitter:
The Hoops have only won once away from home in the Champions League and really need three points against Anderlecht to have any hope of securing third place in Group B and a place in the Europa League.
Interim Anderlecht manager Nicolas Frutos took charge of the Belgians two weeks ago and faces a huge challenge in only his third game as boss.
The Jupiler League title holders have had their worst start to a domestic campaign in 19 years although Frutos appears to have steadied the ship a little with wins in both his games since taking charge.
