‘Celtic well placed to sign Josh Brownhill’ after Burnley contract decision

Celtic have been backed to complete a deal to sign Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill on a free transfer if he is not offered a contract extension.

This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 29-year-old would be “a great option” for Celtic given his availability.

Brownhill’s contract at Turf Moor is set to expire at the end of the season as things stand, and he is now available to agree a pre-contract to move abroad in the summer.

That opportunity has put Celtic on alert as they would like to add further depth, experience, and quality to Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

However, Burnley could still offer a contract extension before the end of the season as no formal decision has been made at the club about his departure.

The midfielder has made 196 appearances for the Clarets since his move from Bristol City in 2020 and has remained a key part of Scott Parker’s side as club captain this season.

Brownhill has started 27 of their 29 league games so far, chipping in with nine goals and four assists from the middle of the park.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that his performances and availability has attracted interest from a number of clubs.

Josh Brownhill is a very decent all-round player and has been for years,” he told Football Insider.

“Over a period of time, he’s given consistently impressive performances which go under the radar.

“He’s one of those players where you talk about others in the team who might stand out more, but you forget him because he’s been consistently solid.

“He’s now doing that for Burnley, and they haven’t half done well this season.

“They’ve not made a decision yet about whether they’re going to lose him or not, so they could still hand him a new contract before the end of the season.

“He’s been one of their better players – but sometimes things come to the natural end of their time.

“Josh Brownhill has been a very good player at that level, and in the Premier League.

“So for a team like Celtic, he would bring a lot of experience and quality to their side which is always a valuable asset.

“But I don’t expect they’ll be the only ones interested because if he’s going on a free, I think he would improve a lot of sides. They’re well placed at Celtic to do this.”
