Celtic will sign striker amid ‘off the charts’ Daizen Maeda claim – expert

Celtic will sign another striker this summer if Daizen Maeda continues to be used as a winger.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider

The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin, speaking on The Agenda podcast (30 May) claimed Celtic are “really keen on Ferencvaros striker Ryan Mmaee“.

The 24-year-old scored 19 goals in 37 total appearances during the 2021-22 season.

Four of those goals and a further three assists came in just eight Champions League games during an eye-catching season for Mmaee.

However, McAvennie claims the signing of a new striker depends on Ange Postecoglou’s plans for Maeda, 24.

“I think Maeda is a centre-forward but he has been playing out wide,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“His energy levels are off the charts. I get it if he is going to be playing out wide, then sign another striker.

“We know Giakoumakis and Kyogo have had injury issues so it would make sense to sing another one.

“Maeda is a great option to have as well. He runs everywhere and he can play in a few positions so it’s something to think about.”

Maeda initially joined Celtic on loan from Yokohama F. Marinos during the January transfer window (2022) with his move being made permanent in May.

He has so far scored eight goals and chipped in with five assists during his 22 outings for the Hoops.
