Championship club slap £5m price tag on Leeds target – report
By Derek Smithson
Leeds have been told they must pay £5million to secure a deal for Jonny Howson, according to a report.
The Daily Mirror claim that the 29-year-old has rejected a new deal at Carrow Road and Norwich are are now prepared to listen to offers for him.
It is understood that the midfielder wants to re-join the Whites after previously spending six years at Elland Road between 2006-12.
However, the report details that Leeds will have to fork out £5million to secure his signature this summer.
Howson is a fan favourite at Leeds after making 219 appearances for the Yorkshire club and his return would go down very well with supporters.
The central midfielder is a technically gifted player that was an ever-present in the Norwich side last season.
He made 39 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying eight assists in return.
Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen has already added midfielder Mateusz Klich from FC Twente and is looking to put his own stamp on the squad.
Football Insider verdict:
Leeds do need to bolster their squad if they are to compete for promotion next season and goals from midfield is an area that needs to be addressed. The Whites were too reliant on Chris Wood for goals during the last campaign and need other players to chip in with goals. Howson would be a very popular addition in the summer and would take no time to settle at Elland Road. However, the new £5million valuation is far too high for the midfielder, despite him being someone that can have a good influence in the Championship. Leeds recently added Klich at just a fraction of that fee and it shows why some clubs look abroad for transfer targets.
