Championship clubs swoop for Ryan Edwards after Dundee United exit – sources
Former Dundee United captain Ryan Edwards is weighing up his options after rejecting offers from several clubs this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Edwards is a free agent after seeing out his contract at Tannadice at the end of last season.
A number of Championship and League One clubs have expressed interest in Edwards this summer and the former Blackburn man is weighing up his options as where to best to continue his career.
The 29-year-old made 112 appearances over his three years in Scotland at the club and was a key part in the side which secured European qualification two seasons ago.
Edwards played almost every minute for United during his first two-and-a-half seasons, racking up 112 appearances during his time in Dundee.
The towering centre-half is effective in both boxes popping with a number of goals from set-pieces.
Coming through the academy at Blackburn, Edwards captained the squad which made the final of the FA Youth Cup in 2012.
Edwards spent three years in the Scottish Premiership after moving around the English leagues.
The defender was dropped for the survival run in in his most recent season north of the border and watched from the sidelines as Dundee United were relegated from the top flight.
As quoted by The Courier following his United contract expiration (21 June), Edwards said he was “desperate” for the club to stay up and said being dropped for the run in was “tough to take” after barely missing a minute during most of his time at the club.
