Championship midfielder heads to Leeds after permission granted – reliable journalist
By Alex Stevens
Huddersfield midfielder Jack Boyle is undergoing a Leeds trial, according to a reliable journalist.
The teenager, who is a first-year professional at the Terriers, has been named as one of the three trialists in the Leeds Under-23s side that were beaten 4-3 by Sheffield United on Monday.
BBC broadcaster Adam Pope reported on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday afternoon that Boyle was one of the mystery trio in the line-up for the home team at their Thorp Arch headquarters.
As Pope pointed out, Boyle is contracted to Leeds’ promotion rivals Huddersfield, who beat them 2-1 in a fiercely contested league encounter at the John Smiths Stadium on Sunday.
The attacking midfielder, 18, joined Huddersfield at Under-10s level and has progressed through the ranks to the point where he signed a professional contract in 2015 that runs until the summer of 2018.
Boyle is regarded as a set-piece expert who can play in a central playmaking role or on the right flank.
Coincidentally, Huddersfield gave the midfielder permission to play for Leeds on the same day in which a recently released Elland Road striker, Frank Mulhern, was on trial for the Terriers against Crewe Alexandra.
The identity of the other two players on trial for Leeds has not yet been revealed, after they were listed simply as ‘Trialist’ in the announcement of the starting XI on the club’s official academy Twitter account.
Clubs hand trials to emerging players when they assess them over a defined period of time with a view to offering them contracts.
Jason Blunt’s Under-23s side also named two first-team regulars Monday, with Marcus Antonsson and Kalvin Phillips both selected after not being used by first-team boss Garry Monk in Sunday’s Championship defeat to Huddersfield.
Phillips only lasted half of the match at Thorp Arch as he was given his marching orders on the cusp of half-time after collecting two yellow cards.
Antonsson, who was an unused substitute for the senior team on Sunday, scored the third goal for the Leeds development side on Monday.
