Championship standard: Tottenham fans lay into 23-year-old for display against Liverpool
By Amir Mir
Ben Davies played the full match as Tottenham were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool on Saturday evening – and fans on Twitter have slammed the defender’s performance at Anfield.
Reds attacker Sadio Mane scored two goals in the space of two first-half minutes as the Senegal international caused left-back Davies problems throughout the night.
The Wales international, 23, was covering for regular full-back Danny Rose, who is currently sidelined with an injury, but he struggled during the game.
Davies could not contend with Mane’s pace as one fan labelled the backup defender a Championship standard player at best.
One supporter stated that the Welshman was weak and simply not good enough during the title clash.
As a result of that defeat, Mauricio Pochettino’s side remain in second place as they were unable to close the nine-point gap on leaders Chelsea.
Antonio Conte’s side can open up a 12-point lead if they beat Sean Dyche’s Burnley on Sunday afternoon at Turf Moor.
With many supporters not pleased with Davies’ display, one fan felt that he did not get any protection from his own teammates.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Davies has played 17 Premier League, Champions League, EFL Cup and FA Cup games this term, helping his team secure eight clean sheets during those encounters.
Since Rose’s injury, Davies has started the last three league games for Pochettino’s side, with his previous starting appearance in the league coming against West Brom in October.
