Chelsea are in talks to sell ‘big name’ 2023 signings – ‘I know for a fact…’, says ex-CEO
Chelsea will sell “big names” signed “very recently” in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested selling their recent imports could be an “escape hatch” from potential punishment for overspending.
Chelsea have spent big on new players since the takeover of Todd Boehly and his Clearlake Capital outfit in 2022 – with a reported £399million spent last summer (2023) alone.
The likes of Moises Caicedo, Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia and Robert Sanchez all arrived at Stamford Bridge for big fees.
Chelsea to sell ‘big names’ to Saudi Arabia this summer, says Wyness
But the big spending has not translated into on-pitch success, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side sitting 11th in the Premier League table with 10 games left to play this term.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think they’ll want to keep homegrown players at the club as much as possible, despite the FFP implications of selling them.
“But I know for a fact that some of the players bought very recently by the Boehly regime have been mentioned in discussions with Saudi officials and clubs.

“We’ll see what comes out of the summer window, but these are big names and Chelsea paid big money to sign them.
“This could be their escape hatch from financial rule breaches, selling these players on to Saudi Arabia.”
