Chelsea are set for a ‘tough few years’ with summer of pain on the way – Keith Wyness
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness has warned that Chelsea are set for a “tough couple of seasons” after failing to meet expectations under Mauricio Pochettino this season.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested that the Blues will struggle in the transfer market this summer and in future windows.
Chelsea are at risk of missing out on European football for a second successive season after an underwhelming Premier League campaign.
Pochettino’s side are currently 10th in the table following their dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.
Chelsea set for summer of ‘struggle’ after underwhelming season
The Londoners have nine games remaining to close a five-point gap to the Red Devils in sixth.
Asked about transfers this summer and in the future, including having the money to spend, Wyness told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “I think their chance to salvage the season was through the cup final recently that they lost to Liverpool.
“But I think it’s going to be a tough couple of seasons and they’ve got to try and get this right.
“Pochettino is struggling slightly in terms of getting the whole squad harmonious and moving together.
“So it’s going to take some real thinking in the off-season.
“I don’t think there’s going to be anything achieved this year.

“They’ll have a platform to go from there for next year, but certainly not the Chelsea platform they used to.
“It’s going to be a tough summer for them.“
