Chelsea ‘bomb squads’ to be blocked after court ruling – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes that Chelsea ‘bomb squads’ are likely to be blocked following the Lassana Diarra ruling.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – revealed the new rules will provide more protection to the players.
The ruling came about after Diarra was unable to find a new team due to FIFA rules and should see fewer restrictions put in place moving forward.
Football clubs have often had ‘bomb squads’ were unwanted players have been sent to train away from the first team until a transfer can be found.
That took place at Chelsea this summer with the likes of Trevoh Chalobah being pushed away from the rest of the squad after Enzo Maresca deemed the surplus to requirement.
Chelsea might have to shut down their ‘bomb squad’
Wyness told Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast: “The ruling is going to be able to help players be able to move clubs.
“I think perhaps there was too strict of a covenant on players and the way that they were treated.
“Things like the bomb squad at Chelsea where players are out of the first team squad and are training by themselves or elsewhere, that may be harder for clubs to enforce.

“I don’t think the transfer system is going to fall apart, but it will give clubs more concern about how they treat players if things aren’t right.
“But overall, I don’t think it’s going to change much other than the balance that players will have a little bit more on their side in terms of it agitating for a move.”
