Chelsea could purposely land points deduction in shock twist – Borson

Chelsea could deliberately fail the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and accept a points deduction if the Premier League closes the loopholes they have been exploiting.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the west London club could decide a points deduction in one season is a necessary sacrifice for them to continue their long-term business plan.

Chelsea sold two Stamford Bridge hotels to a sister company last year for a total of £76.5million to offset their major losses.

The London giants posted a loss of £90million in the 2022-23 financial year alone, with the PSR rules stating top-flight clubs can lose a maximum of £105million over a rolling three-year period.

The Premier League proposed to close the loophole at its annual general meeting in June, but it was left two votes short after only 11 clubs backed the motion.

The Times reported on 5 August the governing body is now considering a fresh bid to change the rules and could ask clubs to vote on its new proposal as early as next month.

Chelsea could accept points deduction to continue business plan

Borson suggested Chelsea likely have a plan in case the loopholes are closed despite conceding it’s not currently clear to see what that is from the outside.

He told Football Insider: “They do have the option to fail PSR and just take the consequences and the penalties that come with that.

“They could look at it and say ‘We are on a five to 10-year business plan, if we have to accept in one season a three-to-five-point penalty deduction, then so be it’.

“Maybe that’s their approach. That was what I thought they were doing right at the start, just sacrificing potential penalties in the pursuit of the business plan.

“It’s hard to know exactly, but I am sure they will have a plan.

“It’s just very hard from the outside to understand what that plan is.”
